If you find the tax code overwhelming, you’re in good company. Donald Rumsfeld, although a smart individual who served as secretary of defense under Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, says he has no idea if he’s paid his taxes properly.

In fact, Rumsfeld sends an annual letter to the IRS to cover his bases—and to tell the IRS that the tax code is ridiculously complex.

We love this line in his letter: “I do hope that at some point in my lifetime, and I am now in my 80s, so there are not many years left, the U.S. government will simplify the U.S. tax code so that those citizens who sincerely want to pay what they should, are able to do it right, and know they have done it right.”

We wouldn’t mind a simpler tax code ourselves!
